Public and Environmental Health Care Services for the South Plains
South Plains Public Health District was founded in 1941 to address the public health needs of its participating counties. Our goal is to prevent illness and environmental hazards, promote the health and preparedness of our citizens and protect the community through education and response.
Women’s Health and Family Planning Program
SPPHD provides Healthy Texas Women and Family Planning Program services through HHSC, Title IX, Medicaid, and Title X.
Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Program
SPPHD provides testing and treatment for Sexually Transmitted Infections, including HIV and syphilis, in conjunction with the Department of State Health Services. Disease investigation and contact treatment are conducted at each clinic location.
Primary Health Care (PHC)
SPPHD provides acute illness care in children and adults and chronic disease care for adults with hypertension, asthma, thyroid dysfunction and those in need of oral hormone replacement therapy to include prevention and primary care. (These services are not offered by the Lamesa SPPHD office; however, these services can be obtained through other clinics in Dawson County).
Care will be provided by personnel in each office with a PHC program under the direction of the contracting physician.
Immunizations
The goal of the Immunizations Program at SPPHD is to ensure that all children receive the needed vaccines to maintain optimal health, either through the Vaccines for Children state funded program, or through referral to a medical home. Those children who are uninsured or under-insured will qualify for the state vaccine through the Vaccines for Children program; those who are fully insured will be referred to their primary provider.
Health Authorities of the Department of State Health Services recommend to all parents of school-age children to have their children immunized prior to the registration date of school enrollment. SPPHD administers vaccines as a contract service provided by the Texas Department of State Health Services and the Texas Vaccines for Children Program. SPPHD will adhere to all policies of the Texas Vaccines for Children Program. Please visit http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/immunize/school/ to familiarize yourself with immunization recommendations and requirements for attendance at schools, preschools, and child-care facilities.
Uninsured adults also qualify for certain vaccines, through the Adult Safety Net Program at SPPHD. This is a state funded program which covers Tdap, MMR, Hepatitis B, and Meningitis vaccines for qualifying adults.
Emergency Preparedness
The South Plains Public Health District provides Emergency Preparedness and Response to man-made
and natural disasters as well as disease outbreak prevention for Yoakum County, Dawson County, Terry County and Lynn County. SPPHD performs these services in connection with our local emergency response partners, Office of Emergency Management and DSHS.
